Day two in Amsterdam kicked off with the best eggs in town. You have to head to Omelegg and if you like brunch, I would highly recommend getting the Viking Fisherman (a combination of Smoked Salmon, dill, lemon creme fraiche all encircled in a tasty omelette) an absolute winner and it definitely was the inspiration behind my Salmon Frittata.
We were in the cycling capital of the world! Every child, woman or man bikes in Amsterdam and it was my turn on the hustly-bustly streets. I have to say not for the faint hearted but you do get used to cycling on the other side of the road and trying not to get caught in the tram lines.
The sun was shining and temperatures were set to sore 30c plus, our bellies stuffed to the brim from Omelegg, we hopped on our bikes and off we cycled for Westerdok.
A beautiful part of Amsterdam and a little off the beaten track from the tourist trail.
Taken with the spirit of the weekend, we had to stop for an early G&T for elevenses at another renowned Gin bar called Razmataz
We arrived at the ferry terminal at Westerdok, bikes in tow to take us over to Pllek for free (pronounced Pleck).
I have been trying to put into words what Pllek is like and the only words I can describe is industrial chic, arty hipster in a unique location along the River IJ (pronounced “eye”). Its very own pebbly beach set in between shipping containers that have been converted into bars, cranes which have been converted into hotels and all in all a really great bubbling vibe.
We settled down for the afternoon, beer in hand on the man-made beach (not quite a Bondi Beach but an Urban one!)
Followed by plunges into the River Ij to cool off in between beers…
Laurie and Sparks showing us how its done
Then Ollie taking centre stage with the backflip…
A perfect afternoon rung out into early evening, it was time to hop back on the ferry
Head back to base for a quick shower, a feed and an evening spent at a silent disco in Vondel Park.
Now I have to say I am a little bit of a dinosaur but embarrassingly this was my first Silent Disco, it was so much fun! If you get the chance anywhere in the world, go!
The evening carried on in great fashion and last drinks were had at Waterkant another great waterside bar…
Stay tuned for my favourite breakfast in The Dam tomorrow…0
