Now for a little history; Rose Bay was one of Australia’s first international airports and the Catalina Planes were the first reliable sea-planes to rule the skies. You can still take sea-planes from this spot (more details here). Catalina has a truly magnificent setting with boasting first class panoramic views of Sydney Harbour. A wonderful spot for an early feed, make sure you book. The place was packed and it had a very good reason to be. I cannot wait to share with you the food which was out of this world.
We were guided to our seats with the most magnifique view of the harbour, right by the window. View below
We started with a drink or two. He had beer and I went straight for the Pinot Noir!
Wonderfully helpful staff, which weren’t too in your face (you know sometimes with fine dining you can get that!) Catalina seemed to have nailed this on the head. An exquisite menu, I literally wanted to eat the entire thing. You can see it here.
We finally decided after a lot of ummming and aaaahing! For starters, I went for an Open Lasagne of King Prawns, Avuga & Truffle Cream. This was outstanding. A fabulous balance of smokey prawns in a tomato based sauce and that truffle cream. YUMM a very clever and wonderful combination. Oh to re-create this Rosedog Style!!
He went for Crispy skin pork belly with pan seared sea scallops,
lemon emulsion, chorizo, cuttlefish and piquillo pepper coulis. How fricking’ good do both look…
For mains it was a toughie. I went for Herb crusted Junee lamb rack, riata, baby vegetables and mint jelly… Phoaaar that lamb was a perfect medium rare, melted in your mouth kinda moment.
We went for a delicious creamy garlic mash to share, I licked that bowl clean #justsaying
We really wanted to taste the desserts but had to leave it for another day. Definitely full after two courses.
I would highly highly highly recommend coming here, you will have to have deep pockets, this was a once off treat. But a really wonderful experience. Lovely staff, delicious food and brilliant wine.
