Almond milk really is that simple. Who would have thought? The thing I love the most about making my own almond milk is knowing exactly what goes into it. No preservatives, sunflower oil (this is common), guar gum, preservatives, hidden sugars, all of which can be found on the labels. Next time check your “nut milk” to find out or find how to make your own below.
All you need is a smoothie maker/nutri-blender/nutri-bullet, something which you can blitz the soaked almonds and water at high speed to make it into the milk, a 1 litre glass reusable bottle and some muslin (or a clean tea towel with suffice)
I sometimes like to add cinnamon to the milk as it is helps bring out the sweetness in foods and helps with those sugar cravings.
You can apply this recipe to all nuts, I think macadamia, cashews and brazil nuts will be good additions to the recipe too.
Do not chuck away the almond husks/meal left behind, these goodies can be frozen in tubs and used for smoothies, baking, added to muesli, porridge, the possibilities are endless and I will be sharing recipes for this in the future.
This is a great recipe if you are considering minimising your intake of dairy milk and using an alternative.
Why is it good for you?
Almonds are a great form of vitamin E, which acts as an antioxidant in the body, it helps protect our cell membranes and can improve our immunity. Nuts also contain a dose of magnesium which really helps our body relax, it aids repair of our muscles and can also help us sleep well. A good dose of potassium for fluid and electrolyte balance. Containing calcium for your bones, teeth formation, heart beat and muscle function. Almonds also have a good dose of protein it has 21g of protein per 100g. That’s pretty high for this little chap. Protein is the essential building blocks for the human body, with out it we have big problems. By eating almonds will your body replenish, nourish and heal your skin, tissues and muscles. A handful of raw nuts can help fend off mid-morning or afternoon sugar cravings, opt for these instead of that choccie bar!
Give it a whirl, I promise there will be no regrets.
