I cannot get over how many additives, preservatives as well as sugar is in the shelf bought tomato ketchup (sauce) when a homemade does taste a lot better.
According to NUTTAB (Australian database for foods), every 100ml of tomato sauce there is 24.1g of sugar (that is a lot of refined sugar!). In many ways I have been trying to reduce my refined sugar (use natural sweetness such as honey or maple syrup) intake as the more I study it in my nutrition degree, the more you understand that sugar does absolutely zero favours to our system. Whether it is honey or cane sugar, it is still sugar, don’t be fooled! I have sweetened by tomato ketchup with honey.
I have been experimenting with a tomato ketchup (sauce) recipe which has been playing on my mind for sometime and I think this tommy k recipe is a perfect one to add to your condiments cupboard. It also lasts for up to 2 months and even better it is cheap to make at around $3 to make a 750ml passata size jar.
Use this for your BBQ’s, burgers, sausages, full English breakkies. All you need is an hour to make it, this weekend is a perfect time to whip together a batch.
